To be a catalyst to women empowerment, in terms of encouraging them to pursue higher studies and support the growth of society, the University of Delhi decided to commence a residential institution, in February, 1973. It was named as Post Graduate Women’s Hostel, which was later renamed as University Hostel for Women.

This first Hall of Residence was started during the Vice-chancellorship of Prof. Swarup Singh under the Chairmanship and Provostship of Prof. K.B Rohatgi (Dean, Faculty of Law) and Prof. Mrs. Sumati Mutatkar (Dept. of Music) respectively.

This hostel was gestated to provide “A home away from home” to scholars not only from India, but from across the globe. The idea was to have “a no profit no loss” structure where women of all the classes and the masses could find an affordable residence.

This institution today provides a home to post graduates and research scholars of more than 55 departments across all the faculties of University of Delhi.

Initially the Hostel had only two residential blocks, namely North and South which could accommodate approx 150 students at the given time.

With more and more women pursuing higher education, the need for accommodation increased, this being the sole women’s hostel at that time. Two more blocks were then added. The blocks were renamed A, B, C and D. Along with the new blocks, the hostel had 260 rooms. In November, 1998 another floor was added in A Block increasing the number of rooms to 275.

At present, along with the rooms, the Hostel has a Common room, a Visitor room, a Mess with dining hall, a Sick room, a Multipurpose hall, a Reading rooms, a Laundry room and last but not the least a Badminton court as well. The Hostel is also PwD friendly with provision of Ramps and a special rest room.

The USP of the Hostel is its prime location. Situated in the heart of the University of Delhi, it is in walking distance to most of the Departments. Along with that, it is also 500 Mts. from the Vishvavidhyalaya Metro Station and in close proximity to various banks, Utility centre and Marketplaces.

For the smooth working of the Hostel and to provide comfortable living environment for the residents, the Hostel has a team of approximately 25 Permanent and Contractual staff members under the guidance of the Provost (Prof. Neera Narang), the Warden (Prof. Sunanda Bharati) and the Resident Tutor (Dr. Bhupesh Rathore).

 University Hostel for Women has been a home to many successful professors in Delhi and other Universities, officials in Indian Administration and various Art and Music aficionados.

We UHWians take pride in ourselves on the fact that all the Administration and the residents reside together as family and celebrate each and every Festival and Occasion with great zeal and zest.

At present, under the chairmanship of Prof. Neera Agnimitra (Dept. of Social Work) and Provostship of Prof Neera Narang (Dept. of Education) UHW is striving towards becoming a true  ‘A home away from home’ for women from all over the world.
